Dish Pitch 101
Just wait…you’re going to love it!
Ever heard of a Dish Pitch? If you’re from around Northern Kentucky, we’re sure you have. If you’ve ever spent time around Sabrina, we’re positive you have. Although we’re unsure of the exact origin story of the Dish Pitch, we do know that it’s one of Sabrina’s favorite activities.
(Doesn’t exactly top skiing, but it’s right there, and that’s saying something.)
Here’s what we know:
We figure that Sts. Peter and Paul Church (host of the 12 Mile Picnic at Hickory Grove Picnic Grounds) probably had a hand in the invention of the Dish Pitch—it’s been played at their summer picnics since Sabrina was a little girl. Several other church picnics had dish pitches but the 12 Mile Picnic at Hickory Grove is the only one that still consistently has it ready to play each summer. And Sabrina lives for it. She’s been known to practice in the off season.
So, what is a Dish Pitch?
A variety of glass dishes are placed in a cluster on a green felt pad. In addition, a “prize” item (such as a bowl of candy or a bottle of wine) is placed under a wire cage at the center of the dish cluster and a shot glass is placed on top. The aim is to “pitch” a dime and land it into a dish or into the shot glass. If you successfully land your dime in the dish, you get to keep the dish (but not your dime…that goes to the church during the picnic!) If you land your dime in the shot glass, you get to keep the prize under the cage!
The challenge:
There are usually young kids running the Dish Pitch game, so part of the challenge is avoiding them as you throw your dimes, and getting their attention when you successfully land a dime! There are usually dish sets that present a healthy challenge as well. Sabrina once won a set of eight beer mugs and they are still the primary mugs used in the Mason household to this day! In tradition, expect some kids running the show and some sure-to-be-treasured dish sets that you’ll want to make your own.
Bring your dimes! They’re going to a great cause.
We are thrilled to say that the Dish Pitch will be live at our wedding. So, bring your dimes and get ready to pitch for some dishes Sabrina has been hunting down all year. There will be a unique variety! All dimes pitched at the wedding will be donated to JDRF in honor of both Sabrina’s nephew and cousin that battle Type I Diabetes on a daily basis.
